 A million stars up in the sky

Pragmatic and Ethnographic Translation

 Pragmatic translation, it refers to the   translation of a message with an   interest in accuracy of the information   that was meant to be conveyed in the   SL form and it is not conveyed with   other aspects of the original language   version. Example: the translation of the   information about repairing a machine.
     Penerjemahan Pragmatic, bertujuan menerjemahkan suatu pesan dengan memperhatikan keakuratan informasi yang akan disampaikan dalam bentuk bahasa sumber serta informasi tidak disampaikan berdasarkan aspek yang lain dari versi bahasa aslinya. Contoh: penerjemahan informasi mengenai perbaikan mesin.




  Ethnographic translation: its purpose is to explicate the cultural context of the SL and TL versions. Translators have to be sensitive to the way words are used and must know how the word fits into cultures. Example: the use of the word ‘yes’ versus ‘yeah’ in America.

 * IDIOM

    An idiom is a word or phrase which means something different from its literal meaning. Idioms are common phrases or terms whose meaning is not real, but can be understood by their popular use.

   Idiom adalah kata atau frase yang berarti sesuatu yang berbeda dari arti harfiahnya. Idiom adalah frasa umum atau istilah yang maknanya adalah tidak nyata, namun dapat dipahami oleh penggunaan biasanya. 

On top of the world : sangat bahagia  

Raining cats and dog : Hujan yang sangat lebat

Give up : keluar

Kick the bucket : meninggal

Golden handshake : mendapatkan banyak uang 

  * METAPHOR

    A metaphor is a figure of speech that identifies one thing as being the same as some unrelated other thing, thus strongly implying the similarities between the two.

   Metafora adalah suatu kiasan yang mengidentifikasi satu hal sesuai dengan beberapa hal lain yang tidak terkait, sehingga sangat menyiratkan kesamaan antara keduanya.

1. My brother was boiling mad => Sangat marah
2. The assignment was a breez => Sangat sulit
3. I'm feeling blue => Sangat sedih
4. He is the apple of my eyes => Seseorang yang sangat dicintai
5. Her voice is music to his ears => Sangat Indah  

 * PROVERB 

   A proverb (from Latin: proverbium) is a simple and concrete saying, popularly known and repeated, that expresses a truth based on common sense or the practical experience of humanity. They are often metaphorical. A proverb that describes a basic rule of conduct may also be known as a maxim.

   Sebuah pepatah (dari bahasa Latin: proverbium) pepatah sederhana dan sering dikenal dan berulang-ulang, yang mengungkapkan kebenaran berdasarkan akal sehat atau pengalaman praktis kemanusiaan. Merekabiasanya berbentuk metaforis. Sebuah pepatah yang menggambarkan aturan dasar perilaku mungkin juga dikenal sebagai kaidah.

 “A tree is known by its fruit” : "Pohon diketahui dari buahnya." (kesuksesan dilihat dari perbuatannya)

 "The word of friend makes you cry – the word of an enemy makes you laugh”: "Dunia teman membuatmu menangis, dunia lawan membuatmu tertawa." (teman akan mengatakan yang sebenarnya dan kadang-kadang kebenaran menyakitkan, sedangkan musuh hanya akan menuntun Anda ke jalan yang salah dengan memberikan nasihat yang tampaknya baik tetapi tidak.)
